This afternoon, after the final prayer of the cardinals in the Pauline Chapel, Cardinal Pietro Parolin began the procession to the Sistine Chapel with a Latin prayer. However, he struggled with the correct Latin pronunciation, particularly with regard to the intonation of the words. Arriving at the Sistine Chapel, the Cardinals sang the famous hymn Veni Creator Spiritus, which every seminarian in the Catholic Church knows by heart - but not the Cardinals. I learned Latin in public school over many years. It used to irritate me in seminary and serving Mass, etc., at how bad the pronunciation was. The clerics disliked that I used classical pronunciation (according to the latest linguistic science) outside the liturgy but pronounced Ecclesiastical Latin without any native accent in Mass.

All these discussions point in one way or another to a fundamental quality of liturgy as it was understood and practiced for centuries in the western and eastern Church. This quality draws upon such concepts as beauty, solemnity, formality, transcendentality, sublimity—but it is not equivalent to any one of these things. Is there a single word by which we might express the quality I have in mind? I believe there is, though we must accept that it is imperfect unto its task, and we must also keep its various meanings active in our minds.
