Enzo Bianchi, founder of the Monastic Community of Bose, died at the Molinette Hospital in Turin at the age of 83 after kidney failure led to a metabolic coma. Bianchi was a monk but never became a priest. A prolific author, he wrote extensively on Scripture, spirituality and contemporary Christianity. He addressed Catholic, Protestant and Orthodox audiences and became a regular interlocutor of secular intellectuals and non-believers. A ruling by the Superior Court of Quebec in Canada finds that Cardinal Marc Ouellet was “falsely accused” of sexual assault in connection with a class action against the Archdiocese of Quebec, and he will receive $100,000 in damages, which he will donate to organizations combating the sexual abuse of Indigenous peoples.
Former Curia Cardinal Marc Ouellet has won his defamation lawsuit against Paméla Groleau. She had accused him of sexual assault. Quebec Superior Court Judge Martin Castonguay found her allegations unfounded and ordered her to pay Ouellet C$100,000 (€62,000) in damages. Judge Rejects Accuser’s Account Paméla Groleau, a former pastoral worker, accused the former archbishop of Quebec of inappropriate touching during several encounters between 2008 and 2010. Her main allegation concerned a priestly ordination in 2010, where she claimed Ouellet ran a hand down her back and touched the upper part of her buttocks. Ouellet denied the allegation. At trial, Groleau acknowledged that this was the only incident she considered sexual assault. The judge found her account “neither credible nor reliable,” pointing to changes and inconsistencies in her testimony. Some evangelical groups in India’s western state of Maharashtra are asking Christians to sign declarations confirming that they attend prayer meetings voluntarily. Maharashtra’s Freedom of Religion Law, which targets “forced religious conversions,” took effect on August 28. It prohibits conversions involving force, fraud, coercion, undue influence or inducement. Christian groups fear its broad provisions could be applied to ordinary religious or charitable activities. The forms, reported in Mumbai and neighbouring districts, state that Christians attend of their own choice, without pressure, inducement or threats. Some churches also request a photograph and an Aadhaar or PAN identification number. The declarations are not required by the government. The move follows several disruptions of Christian gatherings.
